Experience Summary:  Have over 28 years of IT experience, commencing in 1974 on

IBM 360, 370, and 390 equipment, to the present management of Sun, Compaq (formerly Digital), and Data General systems.  This experience covers:

financial and engineering application development for a telephone company;

commercial software development for one of the world's largest software companies;

systems programming, technical support, and facilities management for both IBM mainframe and mission critical UNIX servers;

currently leading a team of seven individuals who manage and maintain over 200 UNIX servers.

Employment Experience:

  • Government of British Columbia - On April 1, 1996, in an effort to restructure and reduce costs, BC Systems Corporation, formerly a crown corporation of the British Columbia Government, was dissolved.  The remaining employees including myself were transferred to the BC Government.

Team Leader of the Sun Team - 1996 to present.  Supervisor responsible for up to nine staff.  Responsible for the following platforms:  SunOS 4.1.x, Solaris 2.x, Compaq Tru64-UNIX, Data General DG/UX, RedHat Linux, and FreeBSD.  Additionally, the team was responsible for AIX, though no hands-on experience on that platform.  Also responsible for instances of Apache Web server, INN (news) server, all Open Systems infrastructure services, including Legato and Veritas NetBackup services (no hands-on experience with NetBackup software).

  • BC Systems Corporation

UNIX System Administrator - 1993 to 1996.  Led a team of up to two individuals responsible for SunOS 4.1.x, Solaris 2.x, Digital OSF/1, Data General DG/UX, Hewlett-Packard HP-UX.  Also responsible for instances of NCSA Web server and a gopher server.  Was transferred to BC Government when BC Systems was restructured to become a branch of the provincial government.  Led the Sun team from 1994 to 1996.

 

MVS Systems Programmer - 1992 to 1994.  responsible for MVS 4.3.0, JES2 4.3.0, IOF T7B, and STK 4400 ACS.  Was project leader of two JES2 and IOF upgrade projects at this large shop, including the coordination of application testing.  Was offered a permanent position after an initial consulting assignment through, and with the agreement of HTS HI-TECH Systems Ltd. As part of an employee transfer agreement when the facilities management contract with HTS HI-TECH Systems was not renewed

  • HTS HI-TECH Systems Ltd. - Product Development, MVS Systems Programmer - 1989 to 1992.  As a product developer responsible for development of individually or as a team member for JES2 Dynamic Proclib product, generic IKJPARS replacement, RACF Toolkit product, DB2 Performance Reporter (for Boole & Babbage), Environmental Monitor and Notification System (EMANS), migrations of applications between data centres.  As an MVS Systems Programmer, part of the team responsible for MVS 2.2.0, provided assistance to Suncor MVS Systems Programming contract, and contracted to BC Systems where responsibility was MVS 4.2.0, JES2 3.1.0 and 4.2.0.
  • Government of New Brunswick - Senior MVS Systems Programmer - 1987 to 1989.  Responsible for MVS 2.1.7 and JES2 2.1.5, program products and capacity planning.  Was offered permanent position after an initial consulting assignment through, and with the agreement of Synerlogic Inc.
  • Synerlogic Inc.:

Consultant - 1987.  Contracts included Government of New Brunswick - Senior MVS Systems Programmer; Alberta Health Care, Vancouver Stock Exchange, and Alberta Transportation  - Application Developer.

 

Software Support - 1986 to 1987.  Worldwide telephone and on-site support for ACT/1.  Contracts included Western Canadian telephone and on-site support for 11 Sterling Software products.

  • Alberta Government Telephones - Senior Technical Programmer - 1974 to 1986.  Highlights:  Management of two contractors; lead programmer in application development using Yourdon techniques performing needs assessment, analysis, design, coding, testing, and maintenance; management of five personal computers; pioneered IBM 3270-PC with AGT, VSAM and ISPF application development using Fortran, COBOL, PL/I, and 370 Assembler; miscellaneous system programming.

  • WestCoast Lan Company Ltd. - Assistance with UNIX (Linux and FreeBSD), Radius, INN, and firewalls, including installation and maintenance - 1995 to present.
  • Micromate Computer Sales & Service - Environmental Monitor and Notification System (EMANS) - 1991 to 1992, after it was purchased from HTS HI-TECH Systems Ltd.
  • Built a TSR for CNIB in Fredricton, NB to enable standby state of World Port 1200 external modem for blind users - 1988.
